Why K12 Hunar Exists

Before heading to school, Prerna sits patiently while her mother oils and sections her hair into two tidy braids. In the afternoon, she dedicates an hour to watching videos about stars, planets, and remarkable discoveries. One day, she aims to become a scientist. Hundreds of kilometres away, Anup stands on a stage, thanking his mentor with a gold medal hanging around his neck. He has just won the National Science Olympiad for the third time. When asked about his dreams, he smiles and says, "I want to become a scientist."

Prerna and Anup are the same age but are on very different journeys. The difference is the opportunities that surround them. While some kids grow up in schools filled with competitions, mentors, scholarships, clubs, and guidance, others spend years unaware that these things even exist. Their stories remind us of a larger reality. Across India, millions of students dream just as boldly, but their journeys are often shaped by the opportunities or lack of opportunities that surround them.

That is why K12 Hunar was created—to strengthen the institutions, people, and systems that shape education, so every learner has the opportunity to grow.

While online videos fuel Prerna's curiosity, many students have opportunities to experiment in STEM labs, participate in Olympiads, build robots, or learn from experienced mentors. The difference isn't determination; it's the ecosystem that surrounds them.

Yet this raises a difficult reality: millions of students still miss valuable opportunities, because access to those opportunities remains uneven.

For some schools, the challenge is infrastructure. For others, it's access to mentors, career guidance, specialized programs, or resources that help learning go beyond the classroom. In many places, teachers work tirelessly despite limited support. The result is that a child's experience of education can be very different depending on where they study. Prerna and Anup are fictional, but the journeys they represent are real. Across India, millions of students share the same curiosity, ambition, and determination. What often separates their paths is access to opportunities, guidance, and the right support at the right time.

This leads us to an important question: should a child's future really depend on where they were born, which school they attend, or whether someone happened to tell them about an opportunity?
